Despite being born with Leber’s Congenital Amourosis, a congenital eye disease that robbed him of his vision since, his disabilities have not prevented him from reaching out to his dreams.




As a child, Wei Lian revealed a liking for music, singing along whenever familiar tunes were aired on the radio. When he grew older, this growing passion led him to pick up musical instruments like the guitar and piano on his own, very much a self-taught process where he learnt through trial and error and conscientious practice.

After months of intensive competition in Project Superstar, he successfully overcame all odds and was eventually crowned the first Project Superstar overall champion.

Kelvin, better known as Wei Lian, has been my pillar of support for the past 20 odd years. He is the elder brother who stands up for his sister when she is bullied, the typical youngster who logs on to msn messenger every other night, the joker who never fails to create laughter wherever he goes, and above all, he loves to sing.

Some of you would have known him through Mu Chuan, where he was singing some years back. Others would have known him on your journey home from work through his busking performances, slowing down your footsteps for that few minutes of the day to take in his soothing renditions of some of your favourite tunes. Some would have only got to know Wei Lian through the local mandarin singing competition, Project Superstar, that is aired on Channel U. No matter what it is, it is really nice to know that Wei Lian’s voice has helped calm many troubled hearts and inspired countless others who were feeling lost in their life journeys.

Taking part in Project Superstar has added colour to Wei Lian’s life. Although he may not be able to see the tears welling up in your eyes as you listen to his songs, and may not be able to know that you have been faithfully standing amidst the crowd at every of his performances listening to his songs, he is truly grateful for all your support and encouragement all this while.

No matter he makes it to the finals of this competition or not, this has definitely been an experience for him. Seeing him smile when he reads the messages his supporters left for him, hearing him practicing his songs at 1am in the morning in his room, and getting anxious for him before every live results show has become part and parcel of my life.
To all those who like Wei Lian’s singing, do continue to support him like you always had.

And to Wei Lian, enjoy being in the limelight, though what comes along with it would be the negative remarks. I see you have been able to stand up against the harsh comments and all odds. To me, you are already a superstar. Continue to shine in your own way, and all the best in this competition.
